Virginia ASCD Advocates for Flexible Approach to Assessment

Virginia ASCD’s influence and advocacy efforts have centered on supporting a group of Virginia superintendents who have asked the state Board of Education for a waiver from existing standardized test procedures at the middle school level. As part of a pilot program designed to move toward a more flexible accountability system and allow time for deeper levels of instruction beyond the standards, VASCD issued the following public comment (PDF) on the request, “This more flexible approach is an important step toward meaningful assessments that support a high quality curriculum characterized by rich and rigorous work and differentiated instruction for all students.”  As of L2L press time, the Board of Education has not taken action on this matter.

Tell Us: What Does a Whole Child Approach in Your School or Community Look Like?

Do you know of a school or community that is doing innovative and interesting things in a sustainable way to ensure kids in the community are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged? We would love to hear about them. Several school and community profiles are already featured on www.wholechildeducation.org, and with your help, we would like to expand these examples and highlight them on our upcoming interactive map for users to access. Please send your suggestions to agholston@ascd.org and include the name of the school or community, city and state, and a brief description about its exemplary whole child approach. We would like this to be an ongoing process, so as you continue to come across schools, districts, and communities that are doing great work in whole child education, please consider sharing with us.

      Throughout August on www.wholechildeducation.org:

      Inclusive Learning

Creating an inclusive environment where each student feels safe and supported in an engaging and appropriately challenging environment is rarely easy, yet it is essential to educating the whole child. Regardless of strengths and challenges, each student has unique needs and deserves full membership within the classroom and school community. Although each student benefits from an inclusive environment, it is vitally important, and often challenging, to provide one for students with special needs. Join us throughout August as we focus on creating inclusive learning environments that develop students at all levels. Download the Whole Child Podcast to hear from Tim Shriver, chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics; LaToya Dean, a content mastery/ helping teacher in Garland, Tex., and a doctoral student at the University of North Texas in the Leadership for Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders program; and Evan Heller, a recent high school graduate and a member of the National Youth Activation Committee. As always, visit the Whole Child Blog often to read engaging posts from diverse writers, leave your comments, and get free resources to help you create an inclusive learning environment that meets each student’s special needs.

Taking on the Real Deal of School Improvement

In Molly McCloskey’s new column on the Whole Child Blog, she examines the best questions that move us from school improvement models that offer quick fixes and instant strategies to meaningful and sustainable changes that make a difference for kids. Read her first post about school environments and leave your comments and questions. Look forward to her forthcoming column about the best questions for creating inclusive learning.
