Japan ASCD Donates to Tohoku International School
At the final Japan ASCD board meeting of the year on May 14, the board members unanimously voted in favor of donating to the earthquake and tsunami disaster by awarding a cash donation of 100,000 yen to Tohoku International School to help during this time of crisis. Japan ASCD also gave the school a free Institutional membership for all faculty members for the 2011–12 school year.
Mike Adair, current Japan ASCD president, sent a note to Tohoku Headmaster James Steward to inform him that Japan ASCD is designating the 100,000 yen to their scholarship fund, which has been set up to help families in Sendai who were severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Adair hopes the fund will enable students to continue their education at the school. Anyone wishing to send a personal or group donation can read more at www.tisweb.net under Donate. Throughout September on www.wholechildeducation.org: Family Engagement
Learning does not begin or end in school. In fact, the learning and development that does—or does not—happen outside of school is often as much or more important than formal learning. Families are a central source of children’s learning and development and their influence cannot be ignored. Engaging with families can inform, complement, reinforce, and accelerate educators’ efforts to educate the whole child. Without strategic and continual connections between families and educators, we cannot ensure that students are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Join us throughout September as we examine research that overwhelmingly reinforces the need for family engagement, practices that create and sustain meaningful involvement, policies that can bring about systemic change, and barriers that we must overcome to achieve this vision. Download the Whole Child Podcast to hear from Heidi Rosenberg, a senior research analyst at the Harvard Family Research Project; Sheila Jackson, Supervisor, Office of School Improvement, and director, Comer SDP Regional Training Center for Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland; and Trise Moore, family and community partnership director for Federal Way Public Schools in Washington State. As always, visit the Whole Child Blog to read engaging posts from diverse writers, leave your comments, and get free resources to help you ensure that schools and families engage in meaningful partnerships that help students succeed.

Virginia ASCD Advocates for Flexible Approach to Assessment
Virginia ASCD’s influence and advocacy efforts have centered on supporting a group of Virginia superintendents who have asked the state Board of Education for a waiver from existing standardized test procedures at the middle school level. As part of a pilot program designed to move toward a more flexible accountability system and allow time for deeper levels of instruction beyond the standards, VASCD issued the following public comment (PDF) on the request, “This more flexible approach is an important step toward meaningful assessments that support a high quality curriculum characterized by rich and rigorous work and differentiated instruction for all students.” As of L2L press time, the Board of Education has not taken action on this matter.
