  • Thanks for starting this group! If Social Emotional Learning is to be incorporated into schools and classrooms, we need to show how it can be integrated into the curriculum, so as not to overwhelm teachers with "one more thing" they need to add to what they already are doing. I tried to make as many of those connections in "Inspiring the Best in Students" (ASCD) out last month. Are there other resources out there that offer examples?

  • The most recent issue of ASCD Express is all about Character Development/Education. Take a look and comment here! Jonathan Cohen's connection of character and climate, and Shelley Billig's connection of character, social-emotional skills, and service fit perfectly with ASCD's Whole Child emphasis. It's where the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act needs to go.

  • Welcome to the Social-Emotional and Character Development (SECD) group. This can be the place to share SECD instructional ideas, implementation challenges, ways to to improve school climate via SECD, staff SECD issues, etc. SECD is crucial to Whole Child education, and to academic success. Just about everything that happens in a school is connected to SECD and it's important for educators, administrators, parents, and policy makers- including School Board members and other funders-- to realize this!
