• Transformative Professional Development

The myriad of students who identify with the hip hop culture is increasing, yet the number of teachers who can identify with students of hip hop generation continues to decrease.  Kunjufu (2005) contended that the teaching population, who are overwhelmingly white, female, and middle class, will most likely differ racially and socioeconomically from the students they serve.    In an effort to transform the way that educators view hip hop culture, I use professional development workshops to demonstrate hip hop as a phenomena that transcends generations and can no longer be ignored by academic environments.

Can professional development bridge the gap between students and teachers?
