“I don’t feel like sandwiching today!”

View Original Photo

Over the past year I’ve become painfully aware of a new verb Millennials love to use, “adulting”. The Urban Dictionary defines it as "to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown ups." Recently Cosmopolitan reported usage of this term has increased 700% the past year on Twitter. There’s even an Adulting blog offering “how to become a grown-up in 468 easy(ish) steps.” Enough, already! I offer this post as a bit of levity at a time when so much around us seems overwhelmingly stressful. Whatever your generation, I hope you enjoy this brief escape from the tensions of today...

I want to talk about MY generation’s daily struggle. We have parents living with us. We have adult children living with us. We have to take care of their needs at the same time we are taking care of our own! As such, we have been dubbed "the sandwich generation." You don’t want to get up and adult today? Fugget-about-iiiiiiiiiiiit! We don't feel like sandwiching!

I think this term could catch on! Consider its uses…

Everybody’s already up and mulling around the kitchen trying to get breakfast, while YOU have to get in and get out of there and get to work. Mom wants to discuss her day and your 24 year old wants to know who ate all the Cinnamon Sugar Frosted Flakes. What do you say? “I don’t feel like sandwiching today!”

Midmorning your spouse calls and asks if you can run home from the office and walk the dog. Your parents are off to doctor appointments and your 22 year old isn’t answering her phone. SOMEBODY has to make sure Sparky gets out for his morning constitutional. What’s your response? “I don’t feel like sandwiching today!”

You’ve asked your 25 year old to clean his room and take out the trash every day this week. Your parents hound you that you are not handling the situation correctly, and they are ready to offer you remedial parenting classes, including how to make him get a job and learn some responsibility. What’s your response? “I don’t feel like sandwiching today!”

On business travel for a few days, you get that call from your spouse expressing the need for you to come home. Your father is refusing to wear his hearing aid, your mother has been picking arguments on how to do the laundry, and your 30 year old reprogrammed all your smart appliances so that they only listen to him. What’s your response? “I don’t feel like sandwiching this week!”

It’s time for that beach vacation you’ve been waiting for all winter! You, the love of your life, your parents, the kids, the dog, and your favorite couple and their parents and children all arrive at a house with 5 floors, 3 kitchens, 7 bathrooms, 2 living rooms and 4 decks that comfortably accommodates 18. So why is everybody in each other’s way? By the end of the first day, they all look at you and ask, “What are we doing for dinner???" What’s your response? “I don’t feel like sandwiching this vacation!”

So the next time you’re having one of those days and you see a random meme complaining that some young, capable, healthy twenty-something doesn’t feel like “adulting” today, speak your truth: “I’m responsible for the generation that came before me, my generation, AND the generation that comes after me, and I DON’T FEEL LIKE SANDWICHING TODAY!” :D
