Fixing Accountability - Speakers at LILA

“Fixing Accountability” This seems to be the theme of this morning sessions at LILA. As 2014 fast approaches and as more schools are identified as failing, this seems to be the most pressing issue. Secretary Duncan made mention of a number of worthwhile initiatives, but first we need to get out from under the accountability rock and start focusing on educational initiatives that will improve student learning. As Dane Linn spoke to us about common core standards he was very clear these will not be truly implemented until we fix the accountability issue.
But how will this get done? While I have mixed feelings regarding the progress of reauthorization of the ESEA, things sound exciting, but I guess my experiences have taught me to pause. I think that Molly McCloskey best summed it up when she said that the words and the actions must match.

Opening Session at LILA

Day One
I’m here! The opening session laid the ground work for the culminating activity -- “Visitations to Capitol Hill!” I have to admit that while Tina was talking about attendees needing a pep talk and being nervous for the visits, I didn’t relate. Now that I have processed the assignment, I completely relate. I feel the anxiety already. At this point I will say that this is motivation to pay close attention to the sessions so I can properly represent my school, my state, and ASCD. No pressure right?
Money Money Money -- ugh -- I can’t get away from it. It seems at the local level it is all we talk about, but (not surprisingly) it seems to be the buzz here too. Mr. Dionne brings our group of educators the political realities that exist. Clearly, this needs to be part of our conversations on Tuesday. While we look at ASCD’s Legislative Agenda that was rolled out tonight, we must connect these ideals to the budget crunch. Could this be the year that we get to reform education in the name of saving money? Simply look at our standardized tests, I know that my state spends, millions of dollars on our state assessment system. What a great opportunity to sell the case for multiple measures of student achievement!

What is going on in Washington? A High School Principal attends LILA

So what is going on in Washington? I know what is happening at Twin Valley High School in Elverson, PA, where I serve as high school principal. I see the way state and federal laws have changed my school and impacted students. I have proudly been a part of great reforms that were motivated by laws. I have felt the pain of cutting programs and furloughing teachers due to our system of school funding.
I admit that I have been known to criticize the powers that be and wonder aloud, “How could they do this?” and “There are obviously no educators in the capital (be it state or national).” But this is meaningless banter that gets us nothing.
So what is going on in Washington? I hope to find out at LILA. How can we be proactive? How can we be heard? How can I gain perspective of a system that seems so foreign, but so deeply touches me? I guess I’ll let you know when I get there…

Day One
