As you get closer to high school graduation, there’s one question you are asked over and over again: "What are you going to major in?" This question only changes slightly once you’re actually attending college: "What’s your major?" What you say doesn’t matter so much when you’re answering your favorite aunt, but when you’re talking up the cutie at your first big college get-together, you’ll want to make a lasting impression. Here some of the most interesting answers you can give.
Aviation Management: If you’re interested in airplanes, Aviation Management is the degree for you. This accredited program at Purdue University provides an education that will teach you how to manage airline safety and airports, work as an air traffic controller, airline safety inspector or even as an airline's human resources manager. You probably won’t have to deal with the day-to-day stresses like delayed flights, missing luggage and tired passengers, but you'll need to be prepared to interact with airport personnel and flight crews. If the inner workings of airplanes and travel are your thing, Aviation Management might be the degree for you.
Viticulture and Enology: When you tell people you’re majoring in Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University (WSU) or Oregon State University, they’ll be very impressed... and then they’ll ask you what it means. You can tell them that with your degree, you have a thorough understanding of winemaking, grape growing, and other aspects of the wine industry. You’ll have to like working outside and experimenting with different flavors to do well with this career path. The only real drawback you're likely to encounter might be an unexpected frost. Oh, and WSU also offers a degree in Wine Business Management if you prefer the business side of things.
Growth and Structure of Cities: If you literally want to help shape the city where you live, you’ll want to pursue a degree in Growth and the Structure of Cities at Bryn Mawr College. This major requires a wide variety of knowledge. You’ll learn about urban spatial organization, politics, economics, cultures, societies and how they all relate to one another. With this degree, it’s likely you’ll spend a lot of time working with city government and planning departments. You’ll want to pursue this degree if you’ve been fascinated by the complexities of your own city (or others).
Toy Design: If you’re one of those people who has plans to be a child at heart forever, you might consider studying Toy Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York. When studying Toy Design, you’ll not only want to be creative, but understand how a child might play with a toy. You’ll learn about toy safety, child development, product materials and how to entertain and educate children of all ages. Once you graduate with this degree, you can find jobs designing toys or use your understanding of toy design to test for safety and age appropriateness. This might also come in handy when you decide to have your own children – you’ll always know how to keep them entertained.
Race Track Industry Program: At the University of Arizona, you can choose to focus on the Business Path or the Equine Management Path in the Race Track Industry Program. In this type of career, you should like to be around people, but you should also have a strong interest in horses. You can bet that this career path will be fast-paced and exciting. See you at the finish line!
With majors like these, all those icebreaker games you're sure to endure at the start of your college career will be a breeze. Just try not to brag too much when you're the center of attention talking about wine, toys or helping 747s land.
