Whole Child in the News

·         Jay Mathews recently wrote an article on his Washington Post blog Class Struggle called “6 Wild Ideas for Ideal Schools.” In the post, Mathews lists 2011 Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award winner Quest Early College High School as the first example of a fresh idea for thriving school models that produce better achievement without putting too much strain on staff and students.

·         Recently, Whole Child Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics Timothy Shriver spoke on Meet the Press’s Education Nation and focused much of his commentary on the importance of a whole child approach to education.

·         Over 50,000 children and families came out to play and learn about a healthy, active lifestyle at Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play on September 24 at the National Mall. ASCD partnered with Nickelodeon to offer fun activities for kids and information to parents on a whole child approach to education. Read Nickelodeon’s press release (PDF).

Whole Child Award Update

Thank you to each ASCD leader who nominated a school for the 2012 Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award! Nominations closed on September 30, 2011. We are excited to notify schools of their nomination and look forward to reviewing a great selection of applications.

Whole Child Partners Meet For the First Time

On September 13, nearly half of our 61 whole child partners gathered at ASCD headquarters for the first-ever meeting. ASCD staff updated the partners about the Whole Child Initiative; showcased the Whole Child Examples Map, which reflects many of our partners’ own award-winning schools; and recommitted to collaborative efforts to ensure that each child, in each school, in each of our communities is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Partners shared their current efforts to advance a whole child approach to education and brainstormed next steps to work across our associations and plan for greater impact. Read a blog post about the meeting from one of the whole child partners, the Institute for Global Ethics.

Association News

  • ASCD Advocates for a Whole Child Approach to Education During National Bullying Prevention Month—October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and ASCD advocates for a whole child approach to education as the way to create safe and supportive school climates in which each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. In a school that supports the whole child, teachers emphasize and model mutual respect for everyone in their classrooms. They apply clear routines, rules, and behavior expectations, and reinforce prosocial behavior. If bullying or other misbehavior happens, teachers assess the misbehavior to determine the cause and the purpose and then intervene based on that assessment. Read the full press release on ascd.org.

  • ASCD Educators Support the Effective Teaching and Leading Act—On October 7, ASCD announced its support of S. 1674, the Effective Teaching and Leading Act. Introduced by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) , S. 1674 would provide $1 billion in targeted assistance to schools to develop and support effective teachers, principals, and school leaders through implementation of proven, team-based professional development strategies. • Benefits and Challenges of National Education Technology Plan Identified in New Policy Priorities Newsletter from ASCDASCD’s latest issue of Policy Priorities focuses on The National Education Technology Plan 2010 (NETP). Calling the plan “lofty, exciting, and well-intentioned…but less like a plan and more like a wish list for cash-strapped schools,” the issue, mailed to members and now available online at no cost to nonmembers, features a thoughtful discussion of the plan’s benefits and challenges. • Central Michigan University Adds ASCD Content to New Teacher Leadership Program—Central Michigan University (CMU) has named ASCD as the lead content provider for CMU’s new Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership program. CMU’s Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership, offered online, in person, and in a blended format, is tailored to educators who want to pursue professional development and personal growth while they continue to teach. This 33-credit degree program is designed to help aspiring teacher leaders become reflective and collaborative professionals, education change agents, and leaders in the teaching profession. With the new content agreement, CMU will enhance their courses with ASCD’s professional development materials for teachers.
